The gold helmets of the University of Notre Dame “Fighting Irish” football team are some of the most instantly recognizable in the NCAA.
Inspired by the golden dome at the top of the campus’ main administration building, these gold helmets have gone through many versions throughout the team’s long history. The versatility of Spectra Chrome has taken this iconic look to the next level!
Adding one additional step to the Spectra Chrome process produces a unique textured look that closely matches the appearance of the golden dome. The university’s athletics department has since adopted this textured gold finish as part of their trade dress – what began with football helmets has now expanded to lacrosse helmets, hockey helmets, and even YETI coolers!
Each Notre Dame helmet starts with a mirror-reflective Spectra Chrome shine; and is then tinted gold. Additional clearcoat is then “sputtered” onto the surface, producing a unique texture over the mirror finish. The amount of texture and the coarseness of the “grain” can be freely adjusted; offering an unlimited range of custom options.
This texturing can also be used to provide a shiny chrome finish that is resistant to fingerprints when handling – ideal for control panel surfaces, fashion accessories, clutch purses, and more.
